How to Convert PNG Images to PDF

Choose page dimensions and review transparent image areas before creating a PDF.

PNG works well for screenshots, diagrams, and transparent artwork. A PDF adds fixed page dimensions for submission or printing. The important choices are scaling, orientation, margins, and the background used for transparent pixels.

Select a Compatible Workflow

Choose an application that explicitly accepts PNG. JPG to PDF accepts JPG and JPEG; changing a filename extension does not convert a PNG. If that workflow is necessary, export a JPEG copy first and inspect its background and quality.

For sharp line art or transparent logos, direct PDF export from an image or document application avoids an unnecessary JPEG conversion. Keep the original PNG so you can adjust the export later.

Create the PDF

  1. Open the image and inspect its pixel dimensions, orientation, and transparent areas.
  2. Use an image application with PDF export, or insert the PNG into a blank document page.
  3. Set the required page size and portrait or landscape orientation.
  4. Scale proportionally to fit the margins. Avoid stretching width and height independently.
  5. Export a separate PDF, reopen it, and check page edges, labels, and fine detail.

On macOS, consult the Preview user guide for supported image and PDF operations. Document applications provide their own PDF export settings.

Check Transparency and Resolution

The application may preserve transparency or place the image against a page background. White text and transparent logos can disappear on a white page. Inspect edges against the actual exported background.

Enlarging a small screenshot does not create extra image detail. Use the best source available and avoid repeated format conversion. If the PDF is too large, try Compress PDF, then check small labels and thin lines again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the PDF have searchable text?

An image remains an image unless a separate OCR process adds a text layer.

Can multiple PNGs share a PDF?

Yes, with a compatible application. Alternatively, export separate PDFs and use Merge PDF in the intended order.

Should I create a JPEG first?

Only if the chosen tool requires it. JPEG introduces lossy compression and does not preserve transparency, so inspect the copy before continuing.
